How does Satellite Phones Connect the Calls

Satellite phones work just like a cellular phone, but offer wide coverage area. Cellular phones bounce the calls from a cellular tower to an existing phone grid, whereas sat-phones utilize a series of satellites in the orbit to help make the call. Thus, satellite phones and service are not affected by violent storms, wars, natural disasters or more such calamities. Where cellular phones do not provide calling facilities in isolated areas having no cellular tower, sat-phones cover the entire planet.

When the callers make the call through sat-phones, they enter the number they wish to dial and press the send key. Now, the satellite phone proceeds towards finding the nearest orbiting satellite, thereby sending the call information to the satellite. It’s the turn of the satellite to relay the call to the gateway (the nearest ground receiver). The ground receiver now tires to patch the call through. If a call to Antarctica originates in
Asia, the gateway will be unable to link the call through the existing phone network. Instead, the ground receiver will patch the call to the nearest satellite, till it reaches one that can link the receiver. The procedure may take place a number of times depending on the location of the caller and receiver.

Finally, the call is relayed from the satellite and is received via the receiver’s network. The format of the call needs conversion so that it can be received on a regular phone or cell phone. When the call’s format is converted and the connection is established, the call is then connected. Thus, it is clearly evident that there are no cellular towers involved that can disrupt communication. So, whether the calling location is South Pole or remote corners of Afghanistan or other war affected area, the call can be easily made through sat-phones.
